Introduction

Having discussed the various properties and components of BizTalk Messaging Services, we'll now look at them in more detail.The complexity of today's business processes and transactions requires more than just getting a document to and from its destination. A common example is receiving a purchase order (PO) from one of your trading partners and, in return, sending them an invoice. BizTalk provides capabilities to define the document specifications, allows us to map common fields between documents, and perform inline operations on the incoming or outgoing documents.

We cover the process of designing and implementing specifications within this chapter. Examples are provided to help us understand the capabilities of func-toids and other characteristics of specifications.We look at the low-level constructs of specifications and how/why they are used to provide the desired interoperability between heterogeneous systems. An overview ofWebDAV is provided to assist us in organizing the many specifications that will arise within complex solutions.
